Motorway Breakdown Assistance

Information, Support & Assistance

In General

  • If your car develops a problem and you cannot stop at a service station, pull on to the hard shoulder.
  • Try to stop as close to emergency telephones as you can and remember to pull your car over as close to the verge as possible.
  • Remember to put on your hazard warning lights and don't forget you will need your lights on during the hours of darkness.
  • Get out of the side nearest the verge and use the emergency telephone as soon as possible giving your exact location.
  • The emergency phone will put you straight through to an operator. Tell them which number marker post you vehicle is nearest to and the details of your breakdown cover. Let them know if you are a lone female or have children in the car.
  • If you cannot stop near a phone there are marker posts at regular intervals on the verge. These have a number indicating your exact location and also have an arrow showing the direction of the nearest emergency telephone.
  • The phones are never more than a mile apart on opposite sides of the motorway.
  • Never cross the carriageway to use a phone.
  • If using a mobile telephone note the number of the nearest marker or junction to give a better idea of your exact location.
  • Don't stay in your vehicle. Get all of the occupants out and stand on the other side of the barrier (where there is one) away from oncoming traffic.
  • Above all - stay calm.

European Motorway Assistance

On many European motorways or Autoroutes, particularly in France, if you breakdown the emergency telephones will be answered by the police. They will arrange for a recovery vehicle to tow you and your vehicle off the motorway either to a local garage or perhaps to a motorway service station, without reference to AXA Assistance.

You may be required to pay for this assistance on the spot, in which case obtain and keep a receipt and we will reimburse you.

Alternatively, once you and your vehicle are towed to a place of safety call AXA Assistance and the recovery agent may accept our guarantee of payment. At this stage AXA Assistance will also arrange any other assistance you may require.
